Final Report: Making Math Accessible to Blind Students

Project goals

The goals of this project were to develop software permitting WinTriangle users to save HTML/mathML pages as Triangle format and to begin development of a save-as option for WinTriangle that would save WinTriangle files as XML. WinTriangle is a RTF text editor with special features permitting its use as a scientific word processor for the blind. Math is expressed in a very compact quasi-linear form with special indicators for markup used commonly in scientific formulas.

Project activities

An application was developed that expressed HTML elements and text in RTF and mathML expressions in WinTriangle RTF linear format. This application was successful in translating most HTML text and mathML expressions into Triangle form, but it was realized that this approach would not easily succeed in providing access to all HTML/mathML documents. Mr. Vivek Narendra then took over the project and began developing a translator that would become a "save-as" feature for Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer parses both HTML and XML (including mathML), and the result should be a more complete and robust translator. This work has not been completed, and Mr. Narendra intends to complete it as a MS thesis project in Computer Science.

Outcome

The current state of the project is disappointing, because none of the intended goals have been completed. The first and most important goal should be completed in the 2003-2004 academic year as described below.

Budget and Expenditure Summary

All funds were used to pay wages for students working on the project.

Future plans

The ability to save mathematical web pages in the format used in Windows Triangle is proceeding and should be completed in the 2003-2004 academic year. Mr. Vivek Narendra, who is currently working on this and other features for the Triangle program, will do this project as his MS Computer Science project.

The goal of using WinTriangle as an XML editor cannot be easily achieved until this first goal is realized. It should not be very difficult to create a WinTriangle-based XML editor capable of displaying virtually any mathematical information but not graphics and other features of more complex web pages.
