The Accessible Graphing Calculator is designed to speak all menus, data fields, commands, functions, and any other text-based information that is presented. This ability allows users with print disabilities to fully access every part of the program. This program does not require a separate Windows screen reading program, but does need a SAPI compliant speech engine.
There is a free SAPI speech engine on the Microsoft web site at http://www.microsoft.com/IIT/download/ttslicense.htm?No=Microsoft+Text-to-Speech+Engines . This page contains the usual license agreement information and an "Accept" button. The next page contains a long list of speech engines. We suggest downloading one of the single voice (Mike, Mary or Sam) Text-to-Speech engines as they are the smallest files (2.3 MB) to download. The filename for the recommended "Mike" voice is MSTTSF22L.EXE.
To install this speech engine, run the MSTTSF22L.EXE installation file after saving it to your hard drive.
When starting the Accessible Graphing Calculator, the speech option is off. Speech is conveniently toggled on and off by the CTRL F12 hot key. Speech rate, pitch, and volume controls are on the SPEECH tab page.
