Boxer

BOXER

A Method for Making Flow Charts for the Blind

I. Overview

Boxer is a program which is designed to facilitate entry of text based diagrams composed of elementary text graphics. Simple boxes, lines, and circles can be created with the mouse or keyboard and text is entered at the cursor location. This is particularly useful when creating text-only files which have flow charts or other representations which utilize simple pictures. Also, the Boxer program is designed save and print diagrams in formats that blind readers will be able to easily interpret with Braille line displays or Braille printers.

II. Introduction to Boxer

Boxer contains two files, Boxer.exe and Boxer.brl which should be placed in the same directory. Boxer.exe is the program, and boxer.brl is a GS8 Braille font file. To run Boxer, simply type "boxer" at the command prompt. To immediately load a previous boxer file type "boxer {filename}" at the prompt.

At start-up, Boxer displays an 80 column by 50 character screen. There is an additional screen which can be accessed by F6 (F5 returns the first screen). If the second screen is utilized, files will be saved in a 160 by 50 format, in which the first (F5) screen is the left side and the second (F6) screen is the right side of the overall picture. Text is entered beginning at the current mouse cursor location. Boxes, lines, and circles can either be drawn by holding a mouse button and dragging or by the using F9, F10, or F11 to begin, the cursor control keys for sizing, and the 'Enter' key to end.

III. Example of use

Figure 1 is a picture of how a diagram would look on the Boxer screen. When viewed, the file can be saved in a Braille font (figure 2.)

By this method a refreshable braille display will produce a replica of the lines that make the boxes. The diagrams can also be printed out on a standard braille printer for a hard copy (Figure 3.)
